Parkay Quarts (Parquet Courts)- Content Nausea 2015 New Review

                                 

This album is the ideas behind half of the Parquet Courts Austin Brown and Andrew Savage. From Brooklyn, New York, the Parquet Courts have been churning out D.I.Y. art punk since 2011. This album was created with the moniker Parkay Quarts since the other half of the band was away due to a math degree and creating a family. This is not the first time they have used this name.It took them only two weeks to record and mix this album. This is the Parquet Courts fourth studio album and their second in a year.Clocking in at 35 minutes, it is full of jangle and swagger with loads of messy guitars and vocals.Evident on this album is clearly an attack on modern culture, Helping on the album is Jeff Brown on saxophone from Jackie O-Motherfucker and Bob Jones on fiddle from the Eaters.Every song on this album is great, but I wouldn't say this album is amazing. I still really like it. There is a cover from the 13th Floor Elevators "Slide Machine" and "These Boots are Made For Walking" from Lee Hazlewood (popularized by Nancy Sinatra). Their influences seem to be such artists as Television, The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, Suicide, Patti Smith, Bob Dylan Wire, Gang of Four, Mission of Burma ,Devo, Pavement, Built to Spill,, The Minutemen, The Talking Heads, Etc Good ole Rock and Roll. Deep Purple Live at California Jam 1974 full Concert

                                 


This is one of the best moments in rock and roll  history. This is the stuff of pure rock magic.Played in front of 200,000 people at Ontario Speedway in Ontario California. Deep Purple at California Jam 1974  gave a legendary show. Sharing the bill was Black Sabbath, Emerson Lake and  Palmer, The Eagles and others. It was filmed for the late night ABC television  "In Concert" series. The show mainly showed the Deep Purple set. They might have showed glimpses of the others. I don't know. David Coverdale (of Whitesnake fame ) and Glenn Hughes had not been in the band very long in this ("Mark 3"- The third lineup) incarnation of the band when this concert took place.Others in the band included Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Roger Glover, Ian Gillian, and Ritchie Blackmore. This was the first time Deep Purple had come to America since the original lineup.

The best tracks are " Burn", "Mistreated", "Smoke on the Water", "You Fool Know One", "Mule",and."Spacetruckin" There are only 7 tracks on this concert clocking in at 119 minutes. Everything past the 40 minute mark is solid amazing. I doesn't even do any justice to describe all the greatest of the concert except the part where Ritchie Blackmore destroys ABC television's camera's and their own equipment towards the end of "Spacetruckin" . The camera crew was getting too much in Ritchie Blckmore's face, so they asked them to stop. As we see in the concert, they didn't stop. He then becomes annoyed and smashes a camera, throws equipment off stage, destroys 3 guitars, catches on fire, plays guitars destroyed with missing strings and with his feet. Ian Paice and Lon Lord are the other two stand outs in the show. In a Rock and Roll History class, this surely would have to be on the curriculum.  Truly a must watch concert. Rhett Taylor

Thee Oh-Sees - Drop 2015 Review

                                       

Formed 1997 in San Francisco, Thee Oh Sees are one of the main purveyors of modern garage rock, On this album, it is a bit of a departure from some of their their other recordings and not as great as others such as Help or Floating Coffin( but it still has some great great songs). As with their other recordings, this is made to be heard on vinyl. It still sounds great on other mediums as well.John Dwer, the frontman and founder plays the instruments on most of the tracks but there still is quite a few of other musicians as well.  Dwer was also the former frontman for the Coachwhips.There is definite homages to early Pink Floyd, Can, Neu, psych Rollings Stones, etc. It is groovy and a good kind of sloppy with equal parts noise and order. Personally I think it is about half great songs and half okay songs.  The stand out songs are track 1 "Penetrating Eye" ,track 2 "Encrypted Bounce, track 3 "Savage Victory", track 8 "Transparent World" Track 9 "The Lens". In fact, this would probably be a good intro to the band, This was another album I kind of randomly chose to review and I like it.Space Garage. Rhett Taylor

I believe this is the next to last performance played by James Booker October 1983. He died a few days later. As one can tell listening, Booker grew up with strong gospel roots. Both his Father and Grandfather were ministers. Booker  is probably my favorite piano player.My wife loved him as well. (R.I.P. to both of them). What a true son of New Orleans he is. I absolutely hate the Dr. John quote that he was the "the best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans has ever produced.". He was probably the best piano player all of New Orleans ever produced. James Booker was also an awesome showman as well as a master pianist.. He even taught Harry Connick Jr. how to play piano fulfilling legal obligations to stay out of prison from Harry Connick Jr.s dad .Booker's reputation playing show's in New Orleans were of legendary status at time. Booker also played with such people as Dr. John, Ringo Starr, John Mayall, The Doobie Brothers, Labelle, Maria Muldaur, and Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia. He even joined the Jerry Garcia Band for a while in 1976. Some of those recordings are phenomenal. Garcia said it felt he was backing up James Booker..He died from complications of substance abuse ( mainly heroin and alcohol) November 8 1983 at the age of 43 waiting to see a doctor in a hospital. Truly one of the best musicians ever since the dawn of time.

D'Angelo and the Vanguard Black Messiah 2014

                                         

This is D'Angelo's first release in 14 years.called "Black Messiah" and is his third album. In that  time he has gotten much better on guitar. That being said,on this album,he plays guitar more than any other album  of his.His voice is what he really is a master at. D'Angelo has that classic  "baby making music " sound.. I can't say it was well worth the wait, but it is still really really great. If  D'angelo was one of my all time favorites, that might be a different story. Don't get me wrong, I still think he is awesome. That saying ( well worth the wait) is so cliche with anything that comes out with a long gape between releases. D'angelo's sound is always rooted in 70's funk /soul  and gospel but he also taps into all the genres of African Americans. (Funk, Jazz, Gospel, Hip Hop, Soul/R&B, Blues and Rock and Roll). Even though it is "retro sounding", it doesn't sound old. The album for the most part is fairly quiet, laid back. free sounding and sounds if he his glad to be making music again.   It taps into the blues vibe of "it's not the notes you play, but what's in between them." Much of the album has political undertones and coincides with the recent happenings of Eric Gardner and the Ferguson riots. I absolutely love the backing band on this album   Some of the performers are James Gadson on drums (One of the most recorded drummers in R&B- working with such artists as Beck, Charles Wright, Herbie Hancock,Marvin Gaye, Blue Mitchell, Lalo Shifrin, BB King, Albert King, Freddie King, Bill Withers, Temptations, Quincy Jones,Paul McCartney  and many many others), Kendra Foster from  P funk, Pino Palladino on bass (whom is regarded by many as one of the best bass players ever, playing with such artists as Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton, BB King, Erykah Badu, Common, The Who, Nine inch Nails, Jeff Beck, Herbie Hancock,Adele,Brian Eno, Steve Gadd,The Herbaliser, Derek Trucks, David Gilmour, Chaka Khan,, Steve Luthaker, and many many others), Q-Tip and Questlove. This album has a musicianship vibe all over it..I really dig all the experimental sounds and samples throughout the album. I also really enjoyed the mixdown sound of the drums and bass. Keeping with the 70's vibe, "Black Messiah" is recorded in analog using tape and and emphasis on vintage instruments.Questlove has stated that this album is the black version of the Beach Boys's "Smile"

Born Micheal Eugene Archer in Richmond, V.A. of a Pentecostal preacher father. Gospel is ever present in all of D'Angelo's music. D'angelo is mostly recognized for his 90's hit song and video "Untitled/ How Does it feel".D' Angelo also plays drums, bass,and keyboards. Throughout D'Angelo's life, he has seen his fair share of ups and downs . Hopefully he will continue to create great music without such long pauses in between and he stays on the up swing. This is my first random music service site that I am reviewing (Link to Site-).Soma Fm. The stations on here are great. There are as of now around 30 channels and SomaFm has a mobile app as well.. For those that enjoy having multiple sources to listen to music from, Soma Fm is a great addition. Boot Liquor is one of my favorite americana/ American roots stations out there, Earwaves is another favorite. There truly isn't one bad one in the bunch.  Rhett Taylor
