Featuring John Scofield, Dr Dan Matrazzo ( from the Aquarium Rescue Unit) ,and Warren Haynes, Allen Woody, Matt Abts (all from Gov't Mule ), this was originally recorded in 1999 from 2 concerts in Georgia, What a jam band- funk -jazz good time this is. There is plenty of groove shakin' going on here. This is essential jam band stuff with an emphasis on the jam part. Woody died not much later after this was recorded which is one of the reasons this wasn't originally immediately released. I love Gov't Mule and John Scofield. I know this might be blasphemous but some of Gov't Mule's songs bore me slightly until the jamming aspect but this is all jamming. Not to sound to cliche, but this definitely sounds like a cross between MMW (Martin Medeski and Wood) and the Allman Brothers.John Scofield made some recordings with MMW ( although he is most known for his work with Miles Davis and Billy Cobham) and Warren Haynes has been an integral part of the Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule. Along with recordings of their own, they also play covers by Wayne Shorter, Mongo Santamaria and James Brown's the J.B.'s. There is tons of call and response type playing and Scofield and Haynes do Allman Brothers style unison licks and many other Allman Brothers Band trademark vibes. All of the musicians on here are the cream of the crop but the one besides Scofield and Haynes that truly shines is Woody on bass. This is very entertaining and in the pocket. As for being a live recording, this is top notch. This will be one of my favorite things that Scofield and Haynes have done. I'm going to give this one a listen to again tomorrow, The video posted is not from the album, but it is Gov't Mule and John Scofield doing one of the songs on the
album from another concert .Rhett Taylor
